According to a recent nationwide online survey, 72 percent of the American public does not know that conventional plastic is made from petroleum products, primarily oil. Moreover, 40 percent of the respondents believe that plastic will biodegrade at some point. The survey was conducted by InsightExpress on behalf of Metabolix, a company that manufactures a biodegradable plastic made with corn. (Bioplastics are becoming quite popular these days — you can read more about them here). |
I wish I could say this comes as a big shock to me, but it doesn't. I've been saying for some time now that all these hot aired politicians who are so hyped up on global warming only mention the consumption of oil through the automobile. Mind you though, it is only 10% of the consumed amount, but the importance of it is extremely intertwined in our daily lives.
even if we knocked out 90% of our dependency of oil by changing a fuel source... we are still going to need that 10%+ for all the other items that we are currently using. Perhaps in the future there will be substitutes for these items...
I often wonder what will happen to the regions of the world that we buy the oil from. Are they as dependent on selling us the oil as we are buying it.
I'm betting you will not hear any of the presidential candidates say any of this because all of them are so short sighted in trying to win a vote...that they leave out truths...
very important truths...
...or maybe... they are part of the 72% of the american population that have no clue...
